Joseph Wilkins Elected To Virginia High School League Foundation Board
September 26, 2019
The VHSL Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to announce the election of Joseph Wilkins, CEO of Wythe County Community Hospital, to serve as a member of the VHSL Foundation Board of Directors.
“We are pleased that Joe Wilkins will be joining the Foundation board,” said Jim Hyson, VHSL Foundation Board President. “The Foundation board has individuals from across the state and Joe is a great choice from the Wytheville area. He brings a diversified background to the VHSL, having participated as a student-athlete at Halifax County High School, continued his football career at William & Mary and now has a child who plays sports at a VHSL member school. But what we are most excited about are the leadership skills he developed on the playing field and now utilizes in his professional career.”
Each year, approximately half of all Virginia public high school students take part in one or more Virginia High School League (VHSL) activities.
VHSL activities cost more to administer than they bring in. Since students have varying interests, a diversity of athletic and academic programs is essential for maintaining strong participation levels. The VHSL Foundation is designed to create an endowment to fund the education-based extra-curricular activities of the VHSL.
The purpose of the VHSL Foundation is to 1) develop alternative financial resources for athletic and educational programs supported by the VHSL; 2) preserve, enhance and diversify opportunities for all students involved in VHSL activities; 3) ensure that the VHSL can continue to provide quality programs and services, including non-revenue sports and other academic or scholastic activities and special programs.
All funds disbursed from the Foundation are used for programs that benefit the 317 VHSL member schools and student participants themselves.
The VHSL Foundation is a private non-profit 501 (C) 3 organization.
