Wythe County Community Hospital Announces 2018 Physician of the Year Recipient

In 2006, employees of Wythe County Community Hospital created the Physician of the Year Award to honor members of the medical staff for their hard work and dedication. Annually in the fall, hospital employees nominate physicians who exemplify the hospital’s five core values: Delivering High-Quality Patient Care, Supporting our Physicians, Creating an Excellent Workplace for Employees, Providing Community Value, and Ensuring Fiscal Responsibility. The Rewards & Recognition Committee determine solicited nominees and select the recipient of this award.
This year’s recipient is Dr. Tracy L. Mathena. Dr. Mathena graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, Va. He completed a combined residency and internship at Eastern Virginia Medical School in internal medicine and family practice. Dr. Mathena is board certified in internal medicine and family practice. Dr. Mathena served in the United States Navy as an officer in communications, surface warfare, reactor mechanical division, and a Navy nuclear power officer. He participated in many activities such as Coats for Kids, Emergency Medicine Club, UVA Navy ROTC Trick Drill Team. Dr. Mathena is an avid runner, completing several marathons to include the Marine Corps Marathon.
“The Physician of the Year award is given to the physician who is looked upon as a role model by his peers, consistently achieves high standards, and delivers patient- and family-centered care,” said Joseph Wilkins, Chief Executive Office at WCCH. “Dr. Mathena exemplifies our core values and we are honored to have him as a member of our medical community.” Dr. Mathena brings 11 years of experience to WCCH and serves as the medical director for emergency services at Wythe County Community Hospital.
Dr. Mathena lives in Wytheville with his wife Belinda and their children Connor 12, Declan 9 and Adrian 6. The oldest son Ryan is serving overseas currently in the Navy on deployment in the Mediterranean.
