WCCH Stryker Gold Environmental Excellence Award 2026

WYTHEVILLE, Va. October 13, 2026 – Wythe County Community Hospital has earned a Gold Environmental Excellence Award from Stryker's Sustainability Solutions, a national recognition honoring healthcare organizations that demonstrate exceptional commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible resource management.

The award recognizes hospitals that achieve outstanding results through sustainability initiatives that reduce waste, conserve resources, and support long-term operational efficiency. WCCH received a Gold designation and an overall score of 300 for its efforts in 2025.

Last year, the hospital diverted 808 pounds of medical waste from landfills through its medical device reprocessing program. The initiative also contributed to environmental restoration efforts through the donation of 100 trees and sea kelp, while helping the hospital manage resources more effectively.

While the environmental impact is significant, the benefits extend even further.

Through its reprocessing program, WCCH not only reduced waste but also helped lower supply costs, demonstrating how environmental responsibility and financial stewardship can work hand in hand. By making the most of available resources, the hospital can continue focusing investments on patient care, technology, and services that benefit the community.

"Healthcare organizations face increasing pressures to control costs while continuing to invest in patient care," said Donald Hayes, Chief Financial Officer at Wythe County Community Hospital. "Programs like medical device reprocessing allow us to be responsible stewards of our resources while also reducing our environmental impact. It's a win for our hospital, a win for our community, and a reflection of our commitment to providing high-quality care in the most efficient and responsible way possible."

The recognition reflects the work of team members across the hospital who support sustainability efforts through practices that reduce waste and maximize the value of healthcare resources. While much of that work happens behind the scenes, its impact helps strengthen the hospital's ability to serve patients and invest in the care and services the community depends on.

"This award is a reflection of our team's commitment to caring for our community in every way we can," Hayes said. "We're proud to be recognized for these efforts and grateful to the employees whose dedication made this achievement possible."
