Medicare Patient-Reported Outcomes for Total Joint Replacement

Your Voice Matters: A Medicare Initiative for Better Hip and Knee Replacement Care

Wythe County Community Hospital is participating in a Medicare initiative that asks patients like you to share your experiences before and after hip or knee replacement. We'll ask you to complete short surveys about your pain, mobility and quality of life. Your answers help your care team make better decisions about your care. And they help improve care for future patients.

Why Your Responses Matter

  • Your answers guide your doctor's decisions about your care.
  • They help Wythe County Community Hospital measure and improve quality of care.
  • They'll eventually help future patients compare hospital results before their own procedure.

What to Expect

These surveys are designed to help your care team better understand your health and recovery and are:

  • About your pain, mobility, health literacy and mental health
  • Completed before surgery and again one year after surgery
  • About 10 minutes long
  • Kept confidential

How to Get Started

Our Outcome Team will reach out by text, email or phone a few days before your first survey is due. Complete each survey promptly so your care team has what it needs to support your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions: Medicare Patient-Reported Outcomes

If you're having a total hip or knee replacement at Wythe County Community Hospital, here's what you need to know about Medicare's patient-reported outcome surveys.

Why does my hospital ask me to complete these surveys?

These surveys are part of a Medicare initiative to track and improve hip and knee replacement care nationwide. You're the only person who can tell your doctor and care team about your day-to-day pain and mobility. Your answers help you and your doctor make the best decisions about your care.

What's in the surveys?

Your care team will ask you to complete surveys about your pain and mobility before your procedure and again one year after. You'll also answer questions about health literacy and mental health.

How long does it take?

The survey is easy to use and takes about 10 minutes to complete.

When will I complete the surveys?

You'll receive the surveys before your surgery, then again periodically for one year afterward. We strongly encourage you to complete each survey so your care team can track your improvement.

How will my responses be used?

Your individual responses are confidential and won't be shared publicly. Your care team uses them to understand your needs better and improve the care they provide.

Your responses are also combined with those of other patients to evaluate and publicly report how well patients at Wythe County Community Hospital improve after total hip or total knee replacement. This helps hospitals measure outcomes and helps patients make informed decisions about where to receive care.

How do I access and complete the surveys?

A member of our Outcome Team will contact you by text, email or phone a few days before your first assessment is due, with everything you need to get started.

Please complete each survey within a few days of being contacted so your care team has the information it needs to provide the best possible care. If you need help accessing or completing a survey, call us at 276.228.0363.
