3D Mammography

At Wythe County Community Hospital, we offer 3D mammography, an advanced screening tool designed to detect breast cancer earlier and with greater accuracy.

Early detection saves lives, and our team is here to provide a comfortable, supportive experience every step of the way.

What Is 3D Mammography?

3D mammography, also called digital breast tomosynthesis, is an advanced form of breast imaging used for both screening and diagnosis.

  • Uses multiple X-ray images taken in seconds to create detailed, layered views of the breast
  • Allows radiologists to examine tissue slice by slice for improved clarity
  • Helps detect cancers that may be hidden in dense breast tissue
  • Provides greater accuracy compared to traditional 2D mammograms
  • Reduces the likelihood of callbacks for additional imaging

Who Should Get a Mammogram?

Routine screening is an important part of preventive care.

  • Women age 40 and older should schedule an annual screening mammogram
  • A referral is not required for routine screening mammograms
  • A referral is required for diagnostic mammograms if you are experiencing symptoms such as:
    • Breast pain
    • A lump or thickening
    • Changes in shape or appearance

Talk with your provider about your personal and family history to determine what is right for you.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Our team is committed to making your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

  • You will be provided a private dressing area and gown
  • You will be asked to undress from the waist up and avoid wearing deodorant or lotions
  • A trained mammography technologist will guide you through the entire exam
  • The breast is gently compressed for a few seconds while images are taken
  • The 3D scanner moves in a small arc to capture multiple images quickly
  • The exam is quick and non-invasive

Additional Breast Imaging Services

Depending on your results, additional imaging may be recommended.

  • Breast Ultrasound
    • Provides a closer look at specific areas of concern
    • Often recommended for women with dense breast tissue
  • Breast MRI
    • Used for patients at higher risk for breast cancer
    • Offers detailed imaging to evaluate the extent of disease
  • Breast Biopsy
    • Removes a small sample of tissue for further testing
    • Helps determine whether an area is benign or cancerous
