Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
At Wythe County Community Hospital, we offer MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), a powerful, non-invasive imaging tool that provides detailed views of the body without the use of radiation.
Our advanced MRI technology helps physicians diagnose, monitor, and treat a wide range of conditions with clarity and precision.
What Is an MRI?
An MRI is a diagnostic imaging test that uses a strong magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed images of your body.
- Produces high-resolution images of organs, tissues, and structures
- Does not use radiation, making it a preferred option for many patients
- Especially useful for imaging soft tissues such as the brain, spine, muscles, and organs
- Helps providers evaluate, diagnose, and monitor a variety of medical conditions
What Can an MRI Show?
MRI is a versatile imaging tool used throughout the body.
- Brain and spine
- Tumors, injuries, nerve conditions, and stroke
- Heart and blood vessels
- Structure, function, and blood flow
- Abdomen and organs
- Liver, kidneys, pancreas, and digestive system conditions
- Bones and joints
- Injuries, inflammation, and joint abnormalities
- Pelvic organs and breast tissue
- Reproductive health and cancer screening support
MRI With Contrast
Some MRI exams use a contrast material to enhance image quality.
- Contrast is given through an IV injection when needed
- Helps highlight areas such as:
- Tumors
- Inflammation or infection
- Blood vessels and blood flow
- Side effects are rare, and your care team will review your history to ensure safety
What to Expect During Your Visit
Our team works to make your MRI experience as comfortable as possible.
- You will change into a gown and remove all metal objects and accessories
- You will lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine
- The exam typically takes 30 to 50 minutes, depending on the type of scan
- You will hear clicking or tapping sounds during imaging (ear protection is provided)
- It is important to remain still for the clearest images
- You will be able to communicate with the technologist at all times
- Some patients may receive medication to help them feel more relaxed if needed
How to Prepare
Your care team will provide specific instructions based on your exam.
- Inform your provider if you have:
- Implanted medical devices or metal in your body
- A pacemaker, stimulator, or metal implants
- Let your provider know if you:
- Are pregnant or may be pregnant
- Experience claustrophobia or difficulty lying still
- Avoid bringing or wearing metal items such as jewelry, watches, or electronic devices
Benefits of MRI
MRI offers clear advantages for many types of imaging needs.
- Provides exceptional detail for soft tissue imaging
- Does not use ionizing radiation
- Supports early detection and accurate diagnosis
- Helps guide treatment and monitor your progress over time
Safety and Considerations
MRI is a safe and widely used imaging procedure for most patients.
- The magnetic field is not harmful, but may affect certain implanted devices
- Patients with some medical implants may need alternative imaging
- There is a very small risk of reaction to contrast material, if used
- Your care team will review your medical history to ensure MRI is appropriate for you
Results and Follow-Up
After your MRI, your results will be reviewed by a radiologist.
- A detailed report is sent to your provider
- Your provider will discuss your results and any next steps
- Follow-up imaging or treatment may be recommended based on findings
