Fluoroscopy

At Wythe County Community Hospital, we offer fluoroscopy, an advanced imaging technique that allows providers to see how your body is functioning in real time.

This dynamic imaging technology helps support both accurate diagnosis and guided procedures, giving your care team the information they need when it matters most.

What Is Fluoroscopy?

Fluoroscopy is a type of medical imaging that uses X-rays to create moving images of the inside of your body.

  • Provides live, real-time imaging, similar to a video
  • Allows providers to see how organs, tissues, and systems function as they work
  • Different from traditional X-rays, which capture a single still image
  • Helps diagnose conditions and guide procedures with greater precision

How Fluoroscopy Is Used

Fluoroscopy plays an important role in both diagnosis and treatment.

Diagnostic Uses

  • Evaluates the function of organs and body systems
  • Identifies blockages, abnormalities, or structural concerns
  • Common exams may include:
    • Barium swallow to assess swallowing and the upper digestive tract
    • GI studies to evaluate the stomach, intestines, and colon
    • Imaging of the bladder, uterus, or spine

Procedure Guidance

  • Helps providers guide tools and devices safely during procedures
  • Supports accurate placement of:
    • Catheters and medical tubes
    • Stents to open narrowed or blocked vessels
    • Instruments used during minimally invasive procedures
  • Commonly used in vascular, orthopedic, and interventional procedures

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your experience will depend on the type of fluoroscopy exam or procedure being performed.

  • You may be asked to change into a gown and remove jewelry
  • You will sit or lie on an exam table while images are taken
  • A contrast material (dye) may be used to improve visibility:
    • Swallowed as a liquid
    • Given through an IV
    • Administered for specific types of exams
  • You may be asked to hold still, change positions, or briefly hold your breath
  • Some procedures may involve sedation or anesthesia, while others do not

How to Prepare

Preparation can vary depending on your procedure.

  • Follow any instructions given by your provider regarding eating, drinking, or medications
  • Tell your care team if you:
    • Have a contrast dye allergy
    • May be pregnant
  • Ask questions ahead of time so you feel prepared and comfortable

Benefits of Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy offers unique advantages that support better care.

  • Provides real-time insight into how your body is functioning
  • Improves accuracy when guiding procedures
  • Helps providers make timely, informed decisions
  • Can reduce the need for more invasive diagnostic procedures

Risks and Safety

Fluoroscopy is a safe and commonly used imaging tool.

  • Uses low levels of radiation for most diagnostic exams
  • Radiation exposure is carefully monitored and minimized
  • Small risk of allergic reaction if contrast dye is used
  • Your provider will always weigh the benefits against any potential risks

Results and Follow-Up

Your results will depend on the type of exam performed.

  • Some results may be available during or immediately after the procedure
  • Others are reviewed by a radiologist and shared with your provider
  • Your care team will explain your results and any next steps or follow-up care
